Blimey that worked. Previously I was mounting md3, but the method I found didn't include lines 2,3 & 4. So although it appeared to work the root password wasn't changed.

Thank you @alvaroag (is there anywhere to give kudos?)

"sda" is for physical disks. For RAID volumes, the device starts with "md", followed by the volume number, which depends on your partition layout. If unsure, run "cat /proc/mdstat" to see which RAID volumes are available.

I have the same problem. But the workaround above won't work. I think it could be due to GPT on RAID1?

yeap, you need to put the server in rescue mode and overwrite the password. Otherwise, you can also backup your server in rescue mode and reinstall fresh (recommeneded in the scenario where someone may have broken into your server and changed the password).

From the manager, change Netboot to Recovery. Then, reboot the server.Once you get the recovery login, enter via ssh, and run:

mount /dev/sda2 /mnt # This may need change depending on your partition layout
mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc
mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys
chroot /mnt /bin/bash
passwd
# Type your new password, then again
exit
umount /mnt/dev /mnt/sys /mnt/proc /mnt
reboot
That should do it.
