hello
Im testing rps r10920.ovh.net.
Speeds were great for about 3 days then during a high speed server to server transfer your system of monitoring detected a defect and the server stopped

Logs:
----------------------
PING r10920.ovh.net (87.98.150.237) from 213.186.33.13 : 56(84) bytes of data.

--- 87.98.150.237 ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, +6 errors, 100% packet loss

this restarted again 17mins later while waiting for the intervention of your team.
I attempted the same transfer again approximately 1hr later with the same result, this time i done a manual reboot which sorted the problem however since then as i stated in previous post down speed as been very bad (approx 2mbps) although up speed seems to be unaffected.

Could this be the result of the server being switched to non-SLA mode? and if so is there anyway of preventing/reversing this?

thank you

Hi,

We are testing our RPS r10917.ovh.net (Centos 5) by using it as a backup MX and have also installed MySQL 5.

MySQL is installed with support for MyISAM storage engine and with InnoDB skipped. With MySQL idle i.e. no active queries the RPS appears to have a significantly high load. Top gives:

-----------------------8<---------------------------
top - 23:14:36 up 2 days, 1:23, 2 users, load average: 2.24, 2.29, 2.22

3007 root 10 -10 2124 2124 1584 S 0.7 0.4 0:08.70 iscsid

----------------------->8-------------------------------------

and a bit later:

--------------------------8<----------------------------------

top - 23:54:06 up 2 days, 2:03, 2 users, load average: 2.28, 2.21, 2.20
Tasks: 73 total, 2 running, 69 sleeping, 0 stopped, 2 zombie

and with MySQL stopped:

----------------------------8<-------------------------------
top - 00:29:29 up 2 days, 2:38, 2 users, load average: 0.06, 0.15, 0.82
Tasks: 64 total, 2 running, 62 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie

Swap: 522104k total, 6736k used, 515368k free, 100444k cached

------------------------------->8-------------------------------------

Compare this with a similar configuration on an entry level VPS.

----------------------------8<-------------------------------
top - 21:58:59 up 26 days, 3:47, 1 user, load average: 0.02, 0.07, 0.08

Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 0k cached
---------------------------->8-------------------------------

From this the load on the RPS seems appreciably high and with the CPU exhibiting a bottleneck with high wait status - appears that this could be due to waiting on disk access/response from iSCSI?

Have OVH got any thoughts on how MySQL on iSCSI disk performance can be improved as the RPS would make a decent starter LAMP server otherwise. I understand NFS and other solutions were being investigated for the RPS - any updates on how these perform compared with iSCSI

Cheers,

TheHub

Update (5th April)

It appears that the high load issue is transient as currently with MySQL started the RPS is operating with 'normal' load .

-------------------------8<-------------------------------
top - 09:15:31 up 2 days, 11:24, 2 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00

How to get free trial server,is that over, can i still get one?

who are you ? what is your dedicated server ? please don't tell a story
but give the facts and technical informations.

Anyway of removing non-SLA mode? I tried reading the related thread but my technical knowledge is very limited and didnt really make much sense of it..... does it get reset at the end of the month and is there anyway of actively preventing this?

It sounds like the RPS isn't quite ready for selling, but it seems that OVH have gone ahead and started selling it anyway despite these issues.

@ Gip2Much - Sounds to me like you have been put into the non-SLA mode my friend. I have had the same thing happen to me about 2 1/2 days in to the trial, my speeds have not gone up and I have not used it in about 5 days nows except to test and see if the speeds have returned. It is like being on a home connection right now. Worthless as a server.

Since re-booting 3 days ago speeds have been pretty bad in general, before this the server had stopped twice when connected to another highspeed server connection and since then its been 75-150k down at max, outgoing connections seem to sometimes move at a reasonable (1000k+) but still not the speeds advertised or what the line/server has done or is capable of.

I was considering paying for the service after the trial has ended but there are obvious bugs need working out first.

I think OVH sold that RPS too early but it became better in the past days. Speed is okay, timouts not seen again since a couple of days and finally requests for OS re-installation doesn't take more than about ~15min (Debian or Gentoo).

We'll see in following two weeks RPS becomes more stable and has left experimental (Beta) status

Scott Curtis

Posted this info elsewhere but this seems like the proper place. Speed appear to be capped at no greater than 100 kb/s down and not much better or that up after going through only 200GB of data transfer. Glad this is a trial or I would not be very happy with this scenario at all, will the speeds get better at any time now or is this it for the month? You can't seriously expect to sell this can you?

im running the rps trial and everything has been running ok up untill the last 24hr when the server became unresponsive 2 twice. i got mailed by support saying

'Our system of monitoring has just detected a defect on
your server r10920.ovh.net.'
the first time it started itself again and the second time i performed a netboot which seemed to sort the problem, however since the second boot speeds have been very slow and my second attempt to reboot has been unsuccessful,
please bare with me as im very inexperienced with linux and its currently nearly 5am and im half asleep

edit: all up and running again working well

When i try to connect to server through putty (ssh) i get this: "Using keyboard-interactive authentication." and i cannot login. The server responds to ping though.

In my manager, in the real time monitoring section i get this:

Server processes
Server running since : NaN day(s) NaN hour(s) NaN minute(s) NaN second(s)

So i deducted the server is not working.

When it was working however it kept timing out and came back in a few minutes. However last time it timed out never came back (can't login error).

Only idea i had was to try and re-install the OS on the server but the feature is disabled now, so i am completely stuck. I tried several restarts (2-3) with no luck whatsoever.

I have received an e-mail from OVH regarding this but the problem is not solved, i still can't login through putty and in my manager in the monitoring section is still can see this: Server processes
Server running since : NaN day(s) NaN hour(s) NaN minute(s) NaN second(s)

In a final attempt to resolve this i will try to re-install fedora (now that it's enabled again) and will provide feedback if that solves anything.

Well, I´m using it with uTorrent, and I have to say I get very good download speeds, although not constantly, but upload... it is not possible to reach for more than 5 or 10 seconds continuous more than 120 Kbs.
And I receive very often the ERROR [F].

So far so good for me. I've been running a few torrents for Debian and Fedora. Decent speeds with no noticeable packet losses.

Scott Curtis

I have had only a few minor glitches that more often than not resolve themselves or are OK after a refresh, with the exception of the 2nd day of trial I need to reinstall the OS software. Speeds are respectable, as is accessing the HD.

This has happend to me for the third time now this morning although its not refusing the connections it accepts SSH connections and does nothing. The same is true for apache it'll connect and never send any data back.

A hard reboot solves the problem, I am wondering if there is an issue here with the SAN for example its connecting but fails to talk to the SAN and well doesnt get any furuther.

*edit* Having browsed the system logs this does seem to be the case, it seemed to have died half way through the night:

i had a bit of trouble setting up and had to reinstall fc6 but other than that very good and the HDD seems alot better than the kimsufi ones imo. a couple of times the conection has dropped for a minute but came back stronger.

Thanks OVH so far so good.

I think its just their mail server which is slow I can recieve passwords up to a few hours later. If you login to your manager go to accounts -> settings -> contact emails you might be able to find the details there without waiting for it to filter through the system.
