If you're running Windows, you can split them without reinstalling.
Control Panel > Admin Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management

I am not to worried about backup as I always do a offline backup twice a day.
Yes you need to reinstall the system using manager, does not take to long and is all automated.

One of the disks is mirrored as raid1 as the back up yes. They can be split but you will then have no backup.
