i tried plesk 9 however i get told it's not a valid plesk 9 key and i have to install plesk 8.x

What version of plesk are you running? You can upload a new key in plesk 9,0 via the control panel of plesk.
If not then if you already have the plesk key file you downloaded from your manager then just upload you key file to your server via root.
If like me and you have upgraded your version of plesk to 9.0 then don't forget to reboot your server as this was my problem with my old key.

can i update the plesk key to the new one? this can not be done via the plesk website as i do not have the email address it was registered with.
