the reason I asked is because I was thinking about installing Esx3i on a new server. The NIC is supported but the raid controller isn't. It is possible to get it working but there seem to be performance issues. I'll investigate this further.

It depends on suppliers and stock but generally the setup would be a Intel Corporation something like 82566DC Gigabit Network Connection and the RAID controller is normally 3ware raid controller.
