It is possible to resize it without losing data but its risky.

Correct. If you're reffering to a pro server you can activate the free FTP Backup space if you don't have a usb or somewhere else to put your backups.

You can boot to some netboot or kvm and resize the partition.

my / mount for my OVH server is only 3 G... installing wine takes up almost 600 MB of that.. so I'm severly limited.. I want to install gnome desktop, and worry that it will fill it too much.. I don't dump anything into the root folder...

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 3.0G 2.0G 858M 71% /
tmpfs 488M 0 488M 0% /lib/init/rw
udev 10M 28K 10M 1% /dev
tmpfs 488M 0 488M 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda2 226G 157G 58G 74% /home

I have to be very diligent and keep checking my /tmp folder as sometimes wine puts in some large files and i have to shutdown and restart wine to clear them out. Someone told me to mount --bind to fix... but that was the extent of the instructions, and google didn't really help..

How can I fix this? Whenever i do an apt-get install, it goes into the / mount, right?
