Right click save as will allow people to watch it without worrying about buffering all the time. Thats the only real reason.

Thanks, I had no idea

because people always put 'right-click save as' when they link to files on their server. I thought they wrote that so streaming wouldn't cause some kind of load on their server.

Yes when a user streams data their player/browser just downloads data and plays it right away, instead of waiting for the whole file to download (buffering). The server load is the same, the protocol is the same, no harm done

Streaming does not cause CPU usage for your server. The user is simply downloading exactly the same as they would if they right-click download the file, its just loaded into their favourite player instead of saved to a file.

You can force it with various PHP download scripts if you wish, otherwise its the users choice.

Hi, I have a simple site and a dedicated server.

I would like to force users to download my videos by right-click, rather than them streaming it.

I've heard streaming it causes more CPU usage for my server?

Is there a way to prevent it from streaming then?
