Even if you have recompiled the kernel then you have to enabled it for modules, also it is best to use the latest kernel from http://www.kernel.org/.

Then you haven't followed the guide correctly.
This is still the default OVH kernel.

Forgive me, but one minute you're asking about VMWare, then XEN, then BSD and back again. Why not start with one thing at a time if it's something you're not used to doing? Once you figure out how to do one, you'll likely be able to figure out the problems with the other OS distros. In fact, I'm not even sure how to answer you now as I might be answering something that you're no longer trying to install...

Just selecting the option doesn't help.

As already explained in the several other threads, you need a modular kernel.
The OVH kernel isn't modular, so you need to compile your own.

You might need to recompile the kernel with module support, but first try this:
Goto the /usr/src directory and you should see some folders, i've got:

linux-headers-2.6.24-16
linux-headers-2.6.24-16-generic

So for vmware I think I would use the path:

/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.24-16/include
