Hello from the madman who wrote the guide in the first place
It would be nice to have mirrors, at least for 2009.06. This is easyish as Sun provides a DVD image with the whole repository on it, ready to go.
Mirroring the development builds is a different beast. There are two kinds of mirror: file-only and full (with metadata). When using a file-only mirror, the client can download the package contents from the mirror, but still relies on the original repository for metadata. This means that if the original repository is not available to you for any reason (the server is down, connectivity problems, etc.) the mirror is useless.
When using a full mirror there are no such problems, but making a full mirror is not trivial at the moment.
Probably, before the next release (2010.02) it will be possible to effectively mirror everything, save search operations, with a standard HTTP proxy.
Bye!
