Slow speeds when downloading from a certain internet connection

I can't remember how long a few days were... maybe I submitted a ticket to VirginMedia, I can't remember either - try it, you never know !

Been the same for over a month now, I'm not expecting any miracles...

To original poster: I had the same problem with VirginMedia @ 20Mbps - the first few days it was slow as a snail... after a few days it magically fixed itself!!! Don't ask me how, it's a mystery to me but perhaps it'll be the same for you and there is hope!

I have the same problem with the Virgin 50MB broadband. When downloaded multiple files I can max out the connection but when downloading a single file get between 250 -400kB/s

I'm really sorry I didn't see your reply - email notification never happened!

I've also noticed that things are a lot faster at night. 300 - 500 kB/s in the early hours of the morning vs the 200 - 300 kB/s during the rest of the day. (Other sources are still always giving a full 50 Mb/s as usual.)

I can't see why they would use a different backbone, but it seems they do sadly. Can you post a tracert to your OVH server so I can see what transit or peering it's actually using please?

Yes I have heard that the 50 Mb/s connections are seperated somehow, but I don't know if that's just at the last mile or what...

I agree, it is lower. However, 50Mbps uses a different head-end connection I believe, to the 10 and 20Mbps tiers. This could be why you're having speed problems in comparison to me. This can be annoying when your backup client only supports 1 thread, like mine! I was grateful for the speed fix.

I've been using multiple threads and am quite happy to, I just thought I'd ask since 200 - 300 kB/s is _way_ below what I'm seeing between all other hosts (including between my OVH server and other ISPs).

I'm happy to carry on though...

Well use multiple threads, I used to have to do that too. It's very hard to saturate 50Mbps with one thread anyway. See my topic regarding testing server speeds.

I'm on 50 Mb/s, and I can saturate that whole link from other servers, as well as saturating it from my OVH server when using multiple threads .

This was resolved months ago. Virgin Media and OVH now peer at LINX. I am on 10Mbps and I get 10Mbps with one connection over HTTP and FTP no problem.

What speed are you on?

I see - no chance this will be improved in the future then if one party isn't playing ball?

Yeah, Virgin Media are known for not being brilliant with OVH. Something to do with them refusing to peer at a certain location, IIRC.

And yeah, Telewest merged with NTL then renamed to Virgin Media.

I remember a similar thing happening to this last year as reported on these forums, and I believe it was fixed by something to do with peering.

Basically my server (213.186.58.66) offers great download speeds to most internet connections, but I'm now using a Virgin Media connection (speedtest.net reports it as Telewest, I think is to do with the companies that Virgin Media bought in the past ).

On most internet connections I can saturate all the download bandwidth (one connection I have access to gets over 10 megabytes / second from my server), but on this one I only get 200-300 kilobytes / second.

The IP address of this connection is 77.96.159.151.

I've been using a 100 MB file of zeroes to test, using HTTP, located at http://www.tghost.co.uk/bigfile.

Edit: Removed file from HTTP server.
