USB disk problem

try an lsscsi and see what output it throws back. lsusb should show usb devices. Then raise a support ticket asking them to replace the USB disk and failed sata disk. Good luck.

Thanks for the offer but I'm ok, I've grabbed what I need.

How can I check a disk which isn't being detected by the system?

I'm currently in rescue mode and using the web interface. On the left (Hard drives) I can see 2. The first is Disk sda (698.6 GB) SMART state: OK . The second is Disk sdb (465.7 GB) SMART state: ERROR (This is my USB disk)

I also see this under RAID: State of md1 (RAID 1) : degraded - State of md2 (RAID 1) : degraded

If you compare my latest fdisk report with the one in my first post in this thread you'll see what I'm saying. One of my 750GB disks has vanished and sdb which ws previously my second internal disk is now my USB disk.

So if I'm correct I have a complete physical disk failure. What info do I need for the support ticket? Is an fdisk report sufficient or do I need to run more commands in ssh?

Sorry guys, Windows... no problem. Linux... I'm still learning.

My USB disk had a faulty PSU which means I still have my data

Thanks for that info pdu. Very timely as I think I now have an internal HDD failure. I'm sure I'm running on 1 disk.

My internal 750Gb disks were previously sda and sdb but now fdisk is reporting my USB disk as sdb and I only see one internal disk. I booted to rescue mode and there's a SMART error on the second disk and the RAID status is "degraded"

If I'm correct then I'm not having a good week am I?

I need to get the data backed up before raising a new ticket.

Here's the new fdisk report:-

Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 750.1 GB, 750156374016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 91201 cylinders

And the report from cat /proc/mdstat

You can get linux raid status by doing:
cat /proc/mdstat

That'll dump info about the health of the arrays

Sent. Thanks again for your help Myatu.

Oops, no, "null@ovh.net" is not the correct e-mail address. Use customersupport@ovh.co.uk instead (so include that French bit and your ticket #).

Thank you very much Myatu.

I'm not fully understanding your last sentence though. I can't access that ticket in the OVH manager, I get a blank page when I click the magnifying glass. Are you saying I can reply to the e-mail even though it says not to reply and the address is null@ovh.net?

Sorry if I've missed something obvious.

Nice, eh?

He's asking you to provide him with the output of the following commands:

Code:
dmesg | grep usb
and

Code:
uname -a
He's also asking if you can give him the go-ahead to perform an intervention (that is, replace the USB drive if it's faulty thus risking the loss of your data on it).

Furthermore, you should be able to reply to your ticket through the OVH Manager or via e-mail (make sure to include the ticket number if you don't hit "Reply").

I've had a message added to my support ticket but can't access it through the manager or by directly clicking the link in the e-mail. IE can't display the webpage and Firefox gives a blank page. I can view older closed tickets ok. The status of the ticket is "replied".

I can see the message in the e-mail but it's in French.

Bonjour, (correction)

merci de nous fournir le résultat de la commande dmesg | grep usb et également celui de la commande uname -a.

Merci de donner en meme temps votre accord pour intervenir sur le serveur.

Cordialement,

François .M
Even if I understood it I can't reply due to not accessing the ticket.

Any advice on how to proceed with this?

Crazy... why send a UK customer a message in French?

Nothing to worry about then.

Thanks for the replies.

It's normal.

/dev/md* is from mdadm (linux soft raid).

I can no longer access my USB disk, it doesn't show with fdisk either.

Before I raise a ticket can someone confirm if it's normal to get warnings that /dev/md* doesn't contain a valid partition table. I don't remember seeing that when I was setting up my USB disk 6 months ago but I'm probably not remembering correctly.

Am I correct in thinking that md* is the RAID disks?

Here's the fdisk -l output.
