You can also receive a free license for ESXi and continue administrating it with the vSphere client after the trial is over. Purchased versions (and the trial) lets you add the host into vCenter, which can be used to manage several ESXi hosts from a single vSphere client, which allows creating clusters, HA, migration from one host to another, backup etc.

It's just a bit shame that you can't use rescue mode to recover data and can't run the ESXi host via vKVM because of an invalid CPU... Thought if you have multiple hard disks on the server, the reinstallation just formats one of them. Allowing to install the hypervisor on a USB stick would be great.

OVH provides you with:
-VMWare server: free
-VMWare ESXi 4: free, and 60 days vSphere use. After that, ESXi will go on working, but you'll have to use command line or purchase a license for vSphere from VMWare.
ESXi is a propietary system, and the command line and the system require quite a lot of expertise
-Citrix Xen server: it's free to use and there is quite a big community for it.
-Just to complete the list: Proxmox (free) and Virtuosso (need a license)

These are just some of the differences. Personally, both are very good. vSphere is very easy to use and powerful. But if something goes wrong or if you need to manage the VMs through command line, it can quite complex.

It's up to you. The best is to give them a go.

Once you've got a server, and as long as it's supported, you can reinstall your server with any of the 2 systems to give them a go for free.

Xen would outperform and be much better then ESXI , also if something breaks in your ESXI config , you are alone ....
check the forum posts about ESXI lately.
