Woohoo! Version 3.1 came out. Massive improvement with the search! Now I might stick with it afterall...

I haven't heard about PostBox before... Certainly looks snazzy, let's see if it works the same Thanks for the tip!

I recently tried out a few. One feature I really need is to be able to have various aliases (to send from) setup. Out of the *new* clients I tried thunderbird is the only one that allowed me to do that.

One that I really need to try out is PostBox.

As for searching/index: I have max 20 emails persistently stored and have only ever searched based on subject. Most of my emails just get deleted right away.

That is true use to be loads, still waiting on the dead Correo project. It was going to be a thunderbird core based client with Mac OS X interface, but it appears to be dead, http://code.google.com/p/correo/

The initial indexing took quite some time as well, but it also does this whenever you receive new e-mail messages. This is where it seems to be struggling on my systems, where it's busy indexing and basically "locks" the particular folder where the e-mail is located (ie., it won't load the e-mail, can't mark it as read, etc). If I'd be getting a dozen emails a day, it wouldn't bother me. But I get about a dozen every 10 minutes... Oof...

... And yes, the Windows system is defragged every night

I haven't used Evolution or Outlook in a while, looks like I'll have to give them a try again

If not Outlook is good, 2003 onwards had some nice improvements to UI.

Really? I find Thunderbird 3.0 amazing, the new search is brilliant, it can find any email. Although it is a shame that development is slow compared to Firefox.

Just Apple Mail at home for me.

Personally I use Outlook 2010 on my computers at home as I tend to deal with everything like that through Windows, and to date since it has been RTM'd I've not had any problems with it since the upgrade from 2007.
