Sorry I don't understand what your advising. I'm a total noob at this.

I understand that the CNAME field points to the A field. What I don't understand is why the http://www.phillipawyllie.eu points to my server(when that points to the A record) but http://phillipawyllie.eu points to another server.

you created only a subdomain A for www. Add before that one more line:
IN A your_server_ip

and you good to go.

Next step is to fix your apache to read: http://www.phillipawyllie.eu/ AND http://phillipawyllie.eu/

Good Luck!

It works now without any intervention on my part, although only http://www.phillipawyllie.eu/ works and not http://phillipawyllie.eu/ (that gives a white page). I suppose you don't try to rename the reverse. I have a wee problem with getting ftp to work, however. At the moment I have this in a field in DNS zone "phillipawyllie.eu A 213.186.33.5". 213.186.33.5 isn't my server, should I edit that field to reflect the ip of my server? If I add an A filed pointing to my server that works, pretty instantly too. I'd like to have phillipawyllie.eu pointing to my server and not use one I've made up.

I took OVH's generous offer of a free eu domain. I however can't seem to get the domain to point to my kimsufi 2008(Debian 4.0). In my manager under "hostings"->"Domain & DNS"->"DNS Servers" I modified the DNS servers to dns12.ovh.net for the primary and ns12.ovh.net for the secondary. Under "Dedicated servers"->"services"->"reverse" I tried to modify the revers to the new doamin but I get this error "phillipawyllie.eu does not point to 213.186.39.179". Any advice for this total noob would be really appreciated.
