much more easy in ubuntu ... no need for initrd , good job.
I thought it would be more complicated, actually took five minutes

Myatu, I'm so surprised Oles hasn't head-hunted you yet.

Once again, nice quick simple guide.

Mine ubuntu vps didn't come with grub - did you install that separately from above, Myatu?

edit: NVM.. ... don't mind me.. it has grub - but its /etc/default/grub where the file is.

Code:
# update-grub
# reboot

... wait, re-enter ...

# uname -a
Linux vps10xxx.ovh.net 2.6.35-23-virtual #41~lucid1-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 2 23:01:03 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Now on to the next problem:

Code:
Feb 5 14:13:22 vps10xxx kernel: [ 963.267555] TCP: time wait bucket table overflow
Feb 5 14:13:22 vps10xxx kernel: [ 963.267567] TCP: time wait bucket table overflow
Feb 5 14:13:22 vps10xxx kernel: [ 963.267579] TCP: time wait bucket table overflow
Feb 5 14:13:22 vps10xxx kernel: [ 963.267591] TCP: time wait bucket table overflow
Think I've hit the limit of the VPS capabilities on that one...

Edit: Ok, solved the time wait overflow too (though curious about the security implication on this). Used echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_tw_recycle for that; you can see the difference with watch -n1 "cat /proc/slabinfo | grep tw_") while doing a test.

Will it be possible to get a UK IP address on one of these?

They're supposed to have IPv6 according to Oles, so I guess that's in the works. The kernel does not make much sense for a VPS though, indeed.

if there is no plan for ipv6, so the ipv6 kernel is a "waste of memory".
considering a VPS should be a low memory footprint machine.

I've wiped all that Plesk fluffy stuff and installed NginX/PHP5-FPM . But during testing I started to hit net_ratelimit

Code:
Feb 3 22:31:58 vps10xxx kernel: last message repeated 9 times
Feb 3 22:31:58 vps10xxx kernel: net_ratelimit: 131 callbacks suppressed
Feb 3 22:31:58 vps10xxx kernel: nf_conntrack: table full, dropping packet.
Feb 3 22:32:04 vps10xxx kernel: last message repeated 9 times
Feb 3 22:32:04 vps10xxx kernel: net_ratelimit: 90 callbacks suppressed
Feb 3 22:32:04 vps10xxx kernel: nf_conntrack: table full, dropping packet.
Original:
Code:
# cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack_max
15636
Upped it to 65535 (for testing purposes) and that worked.

But why is this enabled if one doesn't use NAT inside a VPS (at least not under usual circumstances)? VPS'es should have their own kernel, rather than a dedicated server kernel; better yet, can I use my own?

PS: And network wise, this is slowing the VPS to a crawl as well, to half the speed of an mC 256 in a similar setup (time per request was 31.178 ms mean vs. about 13 ms mean on the mC).

hmm.. when i do a passwd command for a user or root on the vps, it asks for it 4 times?
Enter new password:
Retype new password:
Enter new UNIX password:
Retype new UNIX password:

I've never seen this before..

Didn't get a response on the mailing list on this one, re SMTP. I know port 25 is blocked (as well as UDP except for DNS). But can one use OVH's mail servers instead, without the need to "unblock" it? I thought I saw Oles mention that somewhere, but can't recall it...

ordered one now, waiting for it to come,
why does it come with plesk out of the box?
any way to get it with a clean centos copy?
I want to install on it my own DirectAdmin and test drive it for a while.

I got a website which next week will have approx 40K visitors / day for few days during an event , so it's perfect for my testing

Hello,
If you are a customer and you have up to date service
of invoicing you can take part in beta of
VPS at Ovh.

For that, thank you to subscribe you on the mailing list
vps@ml.ovh.net via vps-subscribe@ml.ovh.net

then you can place the order for the VPS small
via
https://www.ovh.com/fr/commande/vps.cgi
(the order is a little skirts, are patient)

It is free. One will begin the deliveries of VPS
Monday or Tuesday. You will test the “VPS small” of
1.1GHz with 512Mo of RAM and 10Go of disk space which
will cost 9.99Euro HT/mois (with the annual payment).

A little on the VPS Ovh:
- you have the choice between 3 types of VPS:
- with 10Go of disk space (VPS small)
- with 50Go of disk space (VPS medium)
- with 100Go of disk space (broad VPS)
this choice is final and cannot be to evolve/move
in time. it is fixed with life.

- the change of CPU/RAM is dynamic until 11GHz
and 7.5Go of RAM.
you can make it evolve/move (to increase or decrease):
- in burst (per hour 0.08Euro HT/heure by “GHz in more”),
taking into immediate account with “StopAndGo” (in
Standard and Pro) or in “HotAdd/Remove” (in Business)
- ultimately, similar

- SLA by defect:
- Standard SLA 99.9%
- in option:
- Pro +10Euro HT/mois = SLA 99.99%
- Business +30Euro HT/mois = SLA 99.99% and evolution of
Hot CPU/RAM (hotadd/hotremove). Out of Standard
and Pro the evolution of the CPU/RAM will do one
“StopAndGo” of VM (a 30 second old cut
approximately).
The possibility of autoadapter power of
VPS automatically with the load all 1heure.
The robot looks at the occupation of CPU/RAM and
decide to decrease, leave or increase
power of the hot VPS.
- One will propose of Linux and Windows
- Filtered UDP (except DNS)

What remains us to be validated:
- the type of payment (monthly or annual or 2)
- what will determine if port 25 is or not
filtered/redirected towards an email-out of ovh
- distributions to be related to the offer

What one will not propose:
- other sizes of the disk space

In a friendly way
