Not at BHS at this time, I've tried a good many times. Support staff said they are still working on the install script. So if you try and install it you get this error after the re-installation fails at the System copy stage.

The following error occurred:
- Win 2008 setup.exe failed (error-install.log exist):
No script WINactivate.bat present on drive !!!

So is the network fine at OVH or is there something a bit wrong with that?

Your order has been created.
Your order is now being processed. We would like to thank you for choosing OVH.

It's very easy. You need two browser windows open, next to each other. Sign-in to twitter using the first browser window. Five minutes before it starts, go to http://www.ovh.co.uk/dedicated_serve...order_beta.xml and fill out the information. Monitor the first browser window for the tweet from OVH and click "I want one!" as soon as you see it.

Andy
13-06-2012, 17:59
Yes they do have up to 15 min delay but it's handy that OVH give you a 15 mins heads up too Tweet deck works too but it's easy to miss given it only stays on the screen 5 seconds.

The servers are usually gone within 2 minutes as that's when the tweet saying they're gone appears (automatic I think).

Ideally keep the window open a few mins before and make sure you're signed into the manager for quickness. Should make your chances higher.

Jackster
13-06-2012, 17:51
I installed TweetDesk to do it.

I think ifttt.com has 15 min delay between checks?

The servers go in 8 seconds apparently.

Now THAT is a handly little service, Andy (ifttt.com). Thanks for the heads up

Andy
13-06-2012, 17:17
Use ifttt.com and set up a recipe to e-mail you when OVH tweets (ideal if like me you have e-mails open all day). Look every morning too so you know what time they're doing them.

You can login to v3 of the OVH Manager at any time, ie. manager.ovh.co.uk/managerv3 (I take it for BHS you'd need to use ovh.com).

Hi got my Canadian server, thanks.

Is the OVH Manager v5 supposed to be as buggy and non-functional as it is? It's practically unusable.

I see failure to update the screen a lot on Chrome. I have to refresh the page.

On Opera it's an absolute nightmare. Stuff keeps flickering due to some timer I'd guess. Stuff doesn't work.

Also most of the functionality from v3 is missing on v5. Is there any way to disable v5 and use v3 only? v3, though clunky, works.

You're right, 40 miles to the US border by road. It's basically Montreal.

That they speak French in that area has to be good for OVH

Andy

It's right on the border of US and Canada apparently so they can do both equally. Oles chose it because of the power and good peering to all locations.

You need to be patient, are you signed up to the mailing list? - They put information on there.

I ordered mine on 25/05/12 and it was delivered on 04/06/12

They have now started to provision servers (as of 04/06/12).

They started accepting beta requests on 24/05 and started provisioning on 04/06

Follow @ovh on twitter, they post announcements on there. They said today that 90 more servers will be available by 11PM UTC (https://twitter.com/OVH/status/210159065194704898)

31-05-2012, 01:10
Has any word leaked out yet on plans/pricing? I have an alpha server from the earlier round and it's definitely a lot better for me latency wise (being in the USA) and I can't wait to pony up and buy an actual permanent server (as this one is going to vanish sooner or later).

Deliveries will begin next week. So a little patience is needed. We have made every effort to deliver. We're synchronising stock between France and Quebec, we passed through customs with all that, then we built our servers one by one then made them ping. It's quite complex because the requirements in terms of quality are very high: the service is only profitable if it is very reliable. But we have "a bit" of business experience with Roubaix where we've built 25,000 to 30,000 servers each year. We'll get there, eh?
So while your "order" has been accepted, it'll be next week till the servers start to arrive online for us to use

very interesting discussion about a possible London/UK location for a datacentre. At the moment, there is no plan for such DC. Honestly, the ping to our datacentres in RBX is already very low. I guess it could be improved slightly, but difficult to make a point of it:

marc@marcs:~$ ping -c 30 -q ns222097.ovh.net
PING ns222097.ovh.net (46.105.106.149) 56(84) bytes of data.

--- ns222097.ovh.net ping statistics ---
30 packets transmitted, 30 received, 0% packet loss, time 33073ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 16.724/20.138/23.271/2.834 ms

There were discussions for hosting VPS geolocalised in London (in a London DC) some weeks ago, but the distance to the DC is so negligible (< 200miles) that it wasn't considered.

What would be your reasons for having a DC in London, apart from collocation (not considered either)?

Average rent in UK might be on par but London rates you can be looking at £70 per ft² then you can have a 100% increase in rates depending how near to central London you are.

Part of it is exchange rate. Rent in the UK is on par with all the locations, in fact rent is one of the smallest charges actually so probably waste of time to bring it up. The next cost is bandwidth/power. Transit in UK is the same price as everywhere else. Peering is slightly more depending on the location (lets assume EU/US), as you need to lease lines from the DC in UK to your EU/US PoPs. But still, that is around 10% across the channel or Atlantic.

Anyway, the main difference is OVH is simply that little bit cheaper than anyone. Compare them to say redstation and you'll see what is possible in UK if you operate on higher margins with less optimisation (OVH hardware and cooling nets them about 30% savings in power for example, iirc).

Hello,

We are pleased to announce that our data centre in North America, in Quebec to be precise, is open.

Code name: BHS, as in Beauharnois.

So now the BETA phase starts which is used for our BHS teams to manage customer orders and get to organise themselves to deliver servers in less than 1 hour. Since we know that we need a few weeks to get support, we're offering you this BETA for free.

Participation is simple

http://www.ovh.co.uk/dedicated_servers/

Dedicated Server
->
New Datacentre
or
SP Mini 2012 ->
New Datacentre ->

then "I want to participate"

You will need a twitter account to submit your order.

Today we have 90 codes to be delivered. If you have not had a chance to get one today you can come back tomorrow. Each day we will put between 45 and 90 codes for 45 to 90 orders for 45 to 90 servers. Each day. Automatically.

The server that will be deployed at the moment is the SP Mini 2012.

Thank you to everyone and let the party begin!

Regards

Octave
