Peter,

You've been here forever you should be fluent in techie French by now

They do, must check the site more often!

However, the description is in French ( http://www.ovh.co.uk/dedicated_serve...ualisation.xml ). Nice!

One more question, would I need a standard kernal if I wanted SolusVM with OpenVZ?

The SSDs should and do make a huge difference though you can only realistically run them in raid 1 I suppose you could raid 0 but would you really want to pick up the pieces of a failed array.

Someone further up the thread mentioned using OVH shared storage for this and you can get a poor mans HA going on with that if you throw them in a VRACK.

The problem I see there, someone correct me if I'm wrong is that the same gigabit port is going to be used for the storage as for everything else.

I never did any decent testing when I was going down this road to actually get any performance figures together.

It will work, we have some of these but are decommissioning them.

NB. Why no 24gig servers in this range?
They are in the higher range.

I am interested in this server: http://www.ovh.co.uk/dedicated_servers/eg_24g.xml

CPU: Intel Xeon W3520
Cores / Threads: 4 / 8
Frequency: 2.66GHz / 2.93GHz Turbo Boost
RAM: 24 GB DDR3
Hard disk: 2x 2TB SATA2
Network Connection: 1 Gbps Lossless
It's a decent server, we use a few of them, with several VMs on each using xenserver.

This processor can be virtualized as i saw. Does that mean that I can have 4x2.66GHz = ~10.5GHz of VPS-es on it? So for example 10x1Ghz VPS?
It more works on a core (or in this case thread basis) so you could set up a VM and yet it to use 1 core, or all the cores with a certain priority etc.

The server has 24gb ram, can i allocate about ~20gb ram to the VPS-es total?[/quote]

I have a server running using 22GB.

What about the internet connection? Can i make like 20 vpses and allow each for them 100mbit/s, or 10x100mbit/s?
I'm not sure if you can throttle the connection in this way at least in XenServer, you might on other platforms.

You could also give me some more recommendations, maybe a different server or something?
As said above the SATA disks will be the bottleneck here, especially as it's a software RAID.

Hello,

The server is an ok server, however your find your biggest bottle neck will be the HD Disk's, even in Raid 1 you will not be able to run 10 VPS's off this server.

Your want at least Raid 10 Software/Hardware Raid, or keep the current server and use OVH's NAS Service.
