It is not possible to set up an monitoring email alert with an address that contains a plus symbol (+)

I use gmail addresses like username+alert@gmail.com because it makes it easier to filter these messages and highlight them (they are still delivered to username@gmail.com).

Please can you allow plus symbols in email addresses.
