Connection issues?

Andy,

I get the same result when trying to ping facebookmail.com:
36 bytes from ae3.dr03.lla1.tfbnw.net (204.15.20.201): Destination Net Unreachable

However if I dig facebookmail.com for MX records then I get a single MX server returned:
msgin.t.facebook.com

When I ping this it works fine:
PING msgin.t.facebook.com (69.171.244.11): 56 data bytes

Looks like this is intended behaviour from Facebook... Unsure why but hey!

In relation to the Google issues I can confirm that around this time several Google Apps customers I support reported issues with email speed. This turned out to be issues with Google's infrastructure.

Well, as this turns out it was a config error on my server. How it happened I don't know, because nothing was changed to my knowledge. My SMTP server was listening on port 25 and 26, but port 25 was set to my failover IP for some reason rather than all IP's.

Still, it doesn't explain the mystery problems getting to facebookmail.com...

Further proof, the number of SMTP connections into my server suddenly dropped a few days ago:

I host my own mail server so it has nothing to do with OVH's, but their routing is the issue here.

Hi Andy,

I use Shared Hosting and a few months ago I did notice an email from a colleague never got to me. I sometimes visit the Web mail page on OVH.co.uk and the Rouncube page (https://ssl0.ovh.net/roundcube/) says 'DATABASE ERROR: CONNECTION FAILED!' In fact, I just tried it and it says that.

For my website, I use a contact form and all the information on the contact form gets sent to my Gmail address, and then forwarded onto my company email (OVH).

I seem to be getting the same from home too which is odd. Surely nobody is not getting facebook e-mail? The issues I'm having are affecting others too, such as Steam. I've also had reports from clients saying their usually very active inboxes are now very inactive.

Still having this, and yet again no response from OVH on here so I've sent an e-mail to support and to Oles on twitter.

Here is a tracert to one of the problem domains, facebookmail.com

C:\Users\root>tracert facebookmail.com

Tracing route to facebookmail.com [69.63.179.27]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms rbx-51-m2.fr.eu [91.121.167.252]
2 <1 ms * 36 ms rbx-2-6k.fr.eu [91.121.130.130]
3 <1 ms 2 ms <1 ms rbx-g1-a9.fr.eu [213.186.32.233]
4 * * * Request timed out.
5 * * * Request timed out.
6 * 73 ms * nyk-1-6k.ny.us [178.32.135.56]
7 xe-1-1-0.br01.lga1.tfbnw.net [198.32.118.27] reports: Destination net unreachable.

It is also affecting other domains, including Steam, the gaming app. As a result I can't get my SteamGuard code and so I can't play any games for the last 4 days.

A little more proactivity would be helpful on this.

If anyone else see's this, can you tracert to facebookmail.com and let me know if you get a different result to mine?

Thanks.
