Hello,

It is our pleasure to upgrade our range of dedicated servers and to offer you the new "2013 Reloaded" range.

Requirement
- - - - - - - - - -
We looked at your feedback on the technical aspects of previous ranges, and we have also focused on finding out the whys and wherefores of your technical needs. The question "Why?" is the basis of our thinking. It's actually the big question that motivates us everyday. All other issues come second...

Summary
Here are some trends in terms of requirements:
- You are increasingly making use of Cloud services, but sometimes a lot of I/O is required for a VM. Pure SSD storage is offered but with so much I/O, this is not always enough. So you ask us for the possibility to connect a pCC/pCI/VPS to a dedicated server. The pCC is great for rapid deployment of VMs and the server is great for a database or a bare-metal restore.

- You ask us to use services such as the NAS-HA, but on a network private and shared between a dedicated server and infrastructures in other OVH datacentres.

- We have many requests for infrastructures without the public network (!!) Only the private network. In fact, more and more businesses are moving their computing to "clouds" on dedicated servers or the Cloud, but they do not want public IP addresses. They want to access their infrastructures via a private network, with a VPN, dedicated ADSL/VDSL/SDSL or a 1G/10G fibre optic link.

- We have been asked to provide a range of servers for virtualisation using VMware ESXi free, i.e. 32GB RAM max and plenty of I/O disks in order to host the maximum number of VMs per server.

- We have requests for Tier-4 servers, i.e. business-critical servers: 2 physical power supplies per server and plenty of CPU and RAM to run software that cannot be optimised.

- There is strong demand for DRP (Disaster Recovery Plan) infrastructures. This involves two types of architecture:
- the customer manages the primary infrastructure internally and is looking to externalise the secondary infrastructure using a private network.
- the customer manages the primary infrastructure at OVH and is looking to host a secondary infrastructure in one of our datacentres, then to have a private network private between the two.

- Businesses have a lot of data/files to be stored on our infrastructures (SD, GCV, pCA) and they want to be interconnected to our infrastructures in a private fashion, and across multiple datacentres for the purposes of backup. The aim is having maximum security on the exchanges, and managing the confidentiality of data stored in our DCs more effectively.

- For legal and contractual requirements, some customers need to archive data on their dedicated servers and storage facilities across several datacentres within 200km of each other. Archiving is performed at regular intervals (hourly, daily, weekly, monthly).

Here is a summary of some of the whys that can be technically summed up in 2 points:
- improvement of dedicated server storage performances
- upgrade of the "vRack" service to a new type of vRack which will be called vRack 1.5 and vRack 2.0

Reloaded

The KS range responds perfectly to the the needs of customers wanting a personal server with 1 or 2 disks, and more or less CPU and RAM. We are not updating this range.

The SP range is selling well and it responds perfectly to the web hosting needs of businesses and web agencies. It's a great platform to start virtualising and storing archives and backup.

Nonetheless, a server with high performance Hardware RAID was missing from the SP range. So we have added the "SP HardRAID" at £84.99+VAT/month with a Xeon, 32GB RAM, 2 disks and a 100Mbps network.

The EG range EG has been heavily adapted for VMware ESXi free, and therefore passes from 64GB to 32GB. The MG range has not changed in terms of RAM. In both cases we are keeping the excellent E5-1620 and E5-1650, which are 4c/8t and 6c/12t respectively.

On the other hand, we are completely changing the storage platform with the addition of the new generation MegaRaid 7541, with 6Gbps
and 3 options:
- CacheVault
- FastPath
- CacheCade

We are thus offering 4 EGs and 4 MGs with the following configurations:
- 2 x 2TB, HardRAID, CacheVault
- 2 x 160GB SSD, HardRAID, CacheVault, FastPath
- 2 x 2TB, HardRAID,1x80GB SSD, CacheVault and CacheCade
- 2 x 600GB SAS, HardRAID, 1x80GB SSD, CacheVault and CacheCade

CacheVault is a new technology which replaces the battery backup on the HardRAID card. We are now using an ultra fast flash memory, which allows information to be cached prior to saving on the disks, and does not allow it when the server suffers a severe power failure.

FastPath allows for better exploitation of SSD disks by improving the I/O.

To some extent, the CacheCade managed by the MegaRAID card facilitates SSD performances on the large disk sizes. It basically involves a Hybrid configuration makes direct use of the SSD disks as often as possible, but also uses the SATA/SAS disks as the main storage. The combination of these 2 technologies enables us to boast the best I/O performances on the market.

mHG continues with the 128GB and the 256GB which defies all competition, as well as HardRAID and the 10G network.

HG is seriously evolving. Up to now, we've been using chassis with active backplanes. This facilitates automatic location of disks and management of up to 36 disks per server. This platform is very expensive and we have decided to offer it under the product name "BIG-HG", which is offered on 12, 24 or 36 disks, or as a custom version. In order to improve disk and CPU performance on the HGs, while maintaining the benchmark price of £249+VAT/month, we are using a new chassis going up to 4 disks per server (instead of 36).

Result: HG is offered with 2 high-powered E5-2670 12c/24t CPUs, 128GB RAM
and disk types such as EG/MG:
- 2 x 1TB SAS, HardRAID, CacheVault
- 2 x 160GB SSD, HardRAID, CacheVault, FastPath
- 2 x 1TB SAS, HardRAID,1x80GB SSD, CacheVault and CacheCade
- 2 x 600GB SAS, HardRAID, 1x80GB SSD, CacheVault and CacheCade

Improving storage performance is the number 1 objective.
