Also just been getting a quote from GoDaddy as they sent me an email with 15% off dedicated servers, and see they are offering Windows 2003/2008 STD for just under £12 per month, which makes OVHs price look extremely expensive......

raidensnake
08-09-2008, 01:13
at the min the windows 2003 standard is hitting around £320 new on ebay if that for 32-bit. I can't see why they can't do a discount for windows at least.

craigy2391

Yeah, but I just don't understand how with the price of technology coming down, how they consistently increase their prices.

OVH are still one of the most competitively priced out there, so you can grumble that much folks.

Show me a host that provides AS MUCH as OVH for so little £?

Youd be hard pushed.

True... but it doesn't seam that way... OVH used to care about us

Oh I think they need to care about us, lots of small users with 2 or 3 servers adds up to one hell of a lot of servers. I bet the majority of their servers are rented to individuals like us.

As a group we matter ok

Joking aside.

I have the following server, but the Windows Charge along with rubbish download speeds is really making me wonder if its worth keeping......

I pay £140 per month for :-

Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 @ 2.33Ghz
4GB RAM
2 x 1000GB HD + 1000GB FTP Backup
plus Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard.

The whole £30 Windows License is really hitting the wallet, I mean £360 per year is a lot of money.

Shame to get rid of my server as its really fab most of the time, and im sure OVH appreciate my £140 per month as well

Can anything be done about the Windows License Cost Oles?

I also make no money from mine, bar 1 person I host who sends £5 a month to me, and any donations I get from my forum members, which rarely totals over £20. So the rest of the money comes out of my pocket.

I work part time, 16 hours a week and I make under £100 each week. With that I have to pay rent, fuel for my car, any other bills, and whats left over goes towards my server. You can see how pushed I am.

I run my sites as a hobby, shared hosting just won't run my site. It gets over 120,000 hits a day, thats about 2 hits a second most of the time. Shared hosting just can't cope with that sort of demand because they're on overloaded servers.

That will never happen, so I'm staying with my 2-offers-ago Large++, which has by far been the best offer OVH have had since I've known about them.

P4 3.06GHz
2GB RAM
750GB HD
Win 2k3 Web Ed
£47.99/month (thats including VAT as well, windows was free at the time for this server)

Now thats a Kimsufi XL with a bigger HD, but you're also paying for windows on the Kimsufi... So it just goes to show how much prices have gone up.
Agreed a nice offer at the time, I have two similar ones.

Yeah, I am a self-employed Web-Developer, and it's not going that well tbh...but I host a few sites, which get me like 5% of the cost of the server... which is stupid...

I have now been looking elsewhere for a decent server, and its going OK tbh... just need to talk to my clients about it now.

unfortunatly because of the game server and other freeware stuff I do I'm forbidden from making any money at all due to various legal reasons. mainly the fact a lot of agreements state you are not allowed to charge for any services relating to freeware stuff.

To me OVH's cheap servers was just merely a ruse to attract as many customers in as possible, once they had lots of loyal followers they have then shot up the prices and hope that members will stay with them.

Like craigy2391 I wanted to upgrade to one of the higher end servers, but their rip off prices have soon put an end to that, this is another person that's not going to be suckered into their new high prices.

craigy2391
07-09-2008, 20:57
It has hit me pretty hard though. Because I get no profit or money back from my server what so ever. None at all...

raidensnake
07-09-2008, 20:55
the upper limit is the max of £70 pm for me that's to cover all server side costs and I'm kinda needing an upgrade for both server and OS but £30ppm is kinda expensive. shame they can't shave at least £10 off the price for 32-bit 2003 standard to make it more affordable.

craigy2391
07-09-2008, 20:01
Likewise, but then the web-server software I use is currently licenced for windows. So its going to be a lot of hassle for me. I just hope OVH see what's happened, and its now not affordable for most people to get the server's they need.

Also with the shortage of cash atm... lmao

Linux is great as long as you have the time to learn it
Then you will reap the rewards.
Sadly a lot of people dont have that amount of free time, including myself.
But the price of Windows Server 2003 STD (£30 per month) is sloowly pushing me towards Linux or BSD.

It's a lot easier to break Linux than Windows, because Windows holds you by the hand and asks for confirmation before letting you do something that might break it. But believe me, some Linux experience goes a LONG way, especially if you're doing web stuff

my OS is £10 but I can't see how if they say 32-bit standard alone is 20 euros and others are saying both 32/64-bit for the same are £30. that's more it should be cheaper.

craigy2391
07-09-2008, 11:40
Yeah, I agree with that. Before the refresh the windows licence fee for the web edition was £10 its now £15... Yeah its £5 (6.18 euros)... but for some of us that's still a lot!

raidensnake
07-09-2008, 11:33
I'm at a loss with the OS's since there's a conflicky between if 32-bit 2003 standard is available or not and how much cause they are saying 20 euros.

they should have a discount for the 32-bit os's

Agreed the prices do seem to be flying up with setups and windows and VAT.

The prices were very good but now seem to be heading to the expensive range.

Hopefully OVH will find a happy medium for us. I am sure they will.
