desktop gui on ubuntu 13.10 with remote ?

fair enough. The suggestion would be install the Ubuntu server 13.10 and install x2go on the top. That should do

you can use the ready-to-go Ubuntu Desktop distribution, and you'll have a desktop environment out from the start. Just reinstall the server and choose that distribution.

We also use x2go, so I don't see any problem if you want to install it yoursel.

Depends which DE you want.
On server with XFCE accessed over SSH tunnel you'd do:

sudo apt-get -y install xfce4 xfce4-goodies vnc4server
mkdir ~/.vnc
echo "startxfce4 &" > ~/.vnc/xstartup
chmod +x ~/.vnc/xstartup
vncserver :1


For added security you'd want to set vncserver to listen on localhost (vncserver -localhost :1) and access over a SSH tunnel.
