I am still not sure what exactly is the purpose of the hostname. what does it do.

looking for the same thing for my OVH cloud VPS. just want to get my own nameservers .

Found this, but mind you its for dedicated. but vps kinda acts like one. idk..

I've done that and that is fine for RDNS but it doesn't change the VPS name in the control panel summary.
So you've got a RDNS of "myserver.myhostname" and a VPS listed as "vps12345.ovh.net"

In older panel for dedicated servers you can change the listed server name as well as the RDNS. It doesn't seem you can do this in the VPS panel.

Can you change the hostname as displayed in the new control panel for 2014 VPS Classic Range?

Even though I've changed it OK in the Linux OS itself it is still showing as vps12345.ovh.net in the control panel.

Maybe it can't be changed?

Many thanks in advance for your help.
I can't change mine either - usually there's a little pen icon next to the server name where you can rename it (much like there is for hosted exchange products.
